Independent Shopping and Coffee in Axminster

West Country Higgler coffee shop has expanded since first writing this post the Courthouse Makers has moved to new premises.

The West Country Higgler

For a great cup of coffee and homemade cakes visit  The West Country Higgler coffee shop on South Street.

Being an entrepreneur is something many people aspire to be. Having the nerve to step away from the security of working in large hotels and the wine industry at a young age was clearly just the beginning for owner Laurence.

West Country Higgler

Starting off with a  Land Rover converted to serve proper coffee (which is still going strong at events and markets) Laurence had already spotted the expanding need for coffee in our modern lives. Like a drip Britons apparently spent nearly £8bn on coffee last year!  I’m not sure what percentage of that reached Axminster but The West Country Higgler is a great place to get your fix (or tea and cake if you prefer).

With coffee roasted locally in Budleigh Salterton and cakes made by his mum it’s got my seal of approval.

You can also order coffee and tea from their online shop The West Country Higgler.  Just in case you were wondering about the name, a higgler is “a person who travels around selling small items”.

The Courthouse Makers

As my family and friends get older with me, it seems harder every year to find presents for them. Most people have what they need and the high street gift offerings have become so homogenised it’s depressing. So how great to find local crafts thriving in Axminster.  The Courthouse Makers owner Pippa sources gorgeous locally made top quality crafts. These are ideal for presents that feel personal.

Enjoy Browsing

Pippa has found many lovely things  – gorgeous jewellery including delicate earrings. Wonderful mirrors, stained glass, cards and lots more in a relatively small space. She has a great eye for what people will like, with a back ground in fine art she clearly knows what’s what.
