Best Trips With Your Mum this Mother’s Day
We’re finally moving towards Spring, with new signs of life appearing in the garden and the sun starting to make its presence felt.
As always, at this time of year, we are reminded that Mother’s Day is just around the corner. This year it falls on 30th March, so if you haven’t already, mark your calendar.
Whilst there is often plenty of cynicism about these sorts of annual events that people refer to as “Hallmark moments”, and of course, mothers should always be appreciated – it’s never a bad move to take specific time to celebrate the women who raised you.
If you’re stuck for ideas on what to do with your mum this Mother’s Day, read on as we look at some of the best trips you could take together.
Afternoon Tea
Regardless of your taste, gender, or age it seems only fitting that somewhere in any Mother’s Day celebration there should be an afternoon tea. The combination of tea, cake and dainty sandwiches, introduced in the 18th century in England, is a great way to enjoy some refreshment and conversation with your maternal one.
Whether you choose to add a little fizz to your afternoon event or prefer a good cup of the namesake beverage, this country is blessed with some incredible places that offer spectacular options. Why not enjoy some of the stunning views in the Lake District from one of the many tea rooms you will find there? Or, plump for one of the posh hotels in London or Manchester where luxury surroundings and impeccable service await. If you are in Devon there are also some lovely places for a cream tea to choose from.
Take a Mini Cruise
There is something lovely about being out on the water, taking in your surroundings and relaxing. We are not talking about a full-blown holiday but rather a cruise on a lake or other body of water.
It may surprise you that there are quite a few options in the UK. The Lake District, of course, springs to mind and there are plenty of lakes offering cruise options from Windermere to Derwentwater in Keswick. Not only are they surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery you will find in England, but there are some lovely walks you can take from the cruise jetties. Chat and wander at will, enjoy the sights and return to your starting point by a later boat.
Visit a National Trust property
If history and culture are something that your mum loves, then a visit to a National Trust property is the perfect way to spend the day. With over 500 historic properties spread across the UK, you’re sure to find one nearby.
From stately homes to windmills, iconic engine houses perched on cliff tops to properties with literary connections like Beatrix Potter’s cottage, the difficult choice will be deciding which one to visit.
National Trust properties are not just the buildings themselves but also have stunning grounds, formal gardens and even lakes making them the perfect place for a gentle, healthy stroll in incredible surroundings. Option across the UK include the wonderful Stourhead in Wiltshire.
Take in a Show
Whether it’s a modern play in the West End, classic Shakespeare, the opera or even a modern jukebox musical, a trip to the theatre is always a special treat.
Edinburgh is home to the Playhouse Theatre, the largest capacity working theatre in the UK. There is also the Bristol Hippodrome that features many touring West End Shows, the fabulous Welsh National Opera in Cardiff and a whole host of smaller theatres dotted all over the country, with something in easy travel distance for most people.
Great Trips with Your Mum are not just for Mother’s Day
Whatever you do to make this Mother’s Day special for your mum, one thing is certain to make it special important – spending quality time with the ones she loves. Of course these ideas are also great at any time of year, celebrate a birthday or just a fun day out.
