3D Woodland Archery in Dorset

Getting teenagers and young adults out into the fresh air can be hard. The good news is there is a fun activity that all ages can enjoy in Dorset. I was delighted to be invited along to test out 3D woodland archery with it’s ghoulish zombie theme and had a willing group of young teenagers keen to take up the challenge.

3d archery takes your archery skills to the next level. However if you have no archery experience do not worry. At Insight Activities the instruction was excellent and we spent the first hour of the session learning the skills we needed. The attention to detail for each participant was really good with a bit of healthy competition preparing us for the next challenge.

What is 3D archery?

In 3D archery targets of different shapes and sizes often of bird or animals are set around a woodland or rough  ground. Mixing up the distances, sizes and even shooting up and down hills makes the whole activity more technical as participants have to judge angles and where to aim.

Once you get good at this you might even consider competitions. These also test fitness and endurance as contestants race around a course looking for lifelike animals replicating ancient bushcraft skills.

Beating the Zombies

No animals were involved in our session, instead it was the battle against the zombies. Most targets we split into 2 groups to take turns (4 per group) which meant a chance to see each other shot to cheers of good shot or ohh, right in the forehead, or bad luck too high!

We weaved around the wood and there were certainly some targets harder than others. At times kneeling was needed or even aiming through the trees. At all times safety was a key factor and the instructors were excellent at this.

Before we knew it nearly 2 hours had passed and  our final target  – a long shot down hill.

Overall it was a really great session.

Things to know about Insight Activities Dorset

The location is completely rural. That means no facilities so you need to take any food and water you might want. There was a composting toilet, perfectly clean but may not be to everyone’s liking.

As you are walking through the woods and undergrowth sensible shoes are important (trainers as a minimum) and ideally long trousers in case of tick and brambles.

All sessions are popular with teenagers and adults as well. It can also make a fun activity for a hen or stag do. Bushcraft is a really popular option as well as axe throwing and the Medieval Threesome. Insight Activities has two locations, the one we went to was near Tolpuddle in Dorset and another in the New Forest.
