Nordic Walking in Dorset
Nordic walking is the fitness craze that has been sweeping the globe and now you can enjoy the sport in Dorset. This outdoor activity, avaibale all year round is more than just a walk in the park—it’s a full-body workout that’s both fun and effective.
What’s Nordic Walking?
Imagine a workout that’s a blend of a power walk and a dance with the stars—welcome to Nordic walking! Born in the land of a thousand lakes, Finland, this fitness fiesta was created as a summer sweat session for Olympic cross-country skiers. But guess what? It’s not just for the snowbound athletes; over 10 million people worldwide are striding their way to stellar health with Nordic walking, suitable for all fitness levels.
Nordic Walking: The Fun Fitness Revolution!
Poles Apart: We’re not talking about trekking poles here. These are Nordic walking sticks with glove-like grips that transform your walk into a full-body fiesta!
Why Nordic Walking Rocks:
It engages 90% of your muscles: from your calves to your core, and your arms to your attitude, it’s a total body tune-up. Your core, triceps, and shoulders will thank you as they get a workout while you’re simply enjoying the great outdoors. However there is less strain on your joints than you would expect and a feeling of ease that lets you go the extra mile (or two!).
Do You Need to Be a Fitness Freak?
Nope! Whether you’re a couch potato or a fitness fanatic, Nordic walking is your new best friend. It’s a gentle giant that’s kind to your body but tough on calories, especially those pesky ones hiding in your arms, belly, and bottom. And the best part? It’s a “no pain, all gain” kind of deal.
It’s a Calorie Crusher
Grab Your Poles and Reap the Benefits: Wave goodbye to up to 21% more calories than your average walk without poles. Engage 90% of your muscle mass for a symphony of fitness. Power up your back and abs for a core of steel. All this helps with posture and gets you to stand tall and proud with improved posture and gait.
And There’s More:
Anywhere, Anytime: From city pavements to country trails, Nordic walking doesn’t discriminate.
Dress Code? What Dress Code? Forget fancy fitness gear; your comfy clothes will do just fine.
Social Benefits: It’s the social network of fitness—real connections, real fun.
Mental Health Booster: Breathe in nature, breathe out stress, and watch your mood soar.
Even More Benefits – Nature’s Gym Offers:
A Vitality Boost: More energy to live your best life.
Stress Slayer: Send stress packing and welcome zen.
Sleep Like a Baby: Deep, restorative sleep is just a walk away.
Health Hero: Combat modern-day health villains like heart disease and diabetes.

Nordic Walking in Lyme Bay, Dorset
So now you know the real benefits of walking, you need to find a group to walk with. Walking with a group means you will be entertained while you exercise and make new friends. With group sessions, you are more committed to going so harder to skip workouts! Plus if you are a bit nervous, in a group you can “hide” in to start with, relieving any self-imposed anxiety or pressure or bring a workout partner along.
How do I get started with Nordic Walking in Dorset?
If you would like to give it a try, contact Mel who is based in Charmouth and runs Lyme Bay Nordic Walking. She holds ‘Introduction to Nordic Walking’ courses throughout the year, generally on the second Wednesday of the month. Mel has a huge wealth of local knowledge and checks all the routes in advance all around West Dorset and East Devon.
These fun and interactive sessions of 90 minutes will lead you through the steps to learn good technique allowing you to join the regular walks or walk by yourself if you prefer. Cost is £30 including pole hire and first walk with the group.
Ready to Commit? – Walk Schedule with Lyme Bay Nordic Walks
The group offers regular walks in the Lyme Bay region which includes West Dorset and East Devon taking in the fabulous local scenery, less well know routes and options for a sociable coffee afterwards.
Regular walks are available nearly every day of the week including:
Fresh Air Friday – this is a slower paced walk of approximately 2 miles, aimed at getting individuals back into walking.
Walk – this walk is approximately 3 miles following an undulating route with nothing too challenging in terms of terrain. Suitable for those looking to improve their fitness post illness/injury and for walkers seeking a shorter route at a slower pace.
Stride – this walk is 5 to 6 miles in length. An undulating route with possibly some challenging hills. Suitable for those who enjoy a steady pace.
Event – This walk is usually 3+ hours in duration and 7 to 10 miles in length. It will generally involve taking a packed lunch and may include another activity.
So why not give it a go – this great activity really is a step up from a regular ramble and offers so many added benefits especially when you join a group.
