When I set off round the world in 2020, I had saved hard to give me the opportunity to travel and not worry about having to work if nothing came along. That was just as well,  because it turned out in those days there weren’t many opportunities in South America for me to make money while travelling.

Luckily, making money while you’re on the road isn’t as difficult as it might seem as there are so many different things you can do.  Here are some of the best ways to support yourself whilst you travel.

Over the last 10 years the range of jobs that can be carried out remotely has increased dramatically. This means that freelancing is great for anyone who has any kind of desirable skill.

Sites like Upwork and Fiverr are perfect for freelancers, as you can find remote jobs that suit your skill set. Jobs are plentiful online, like digital marketing or software development which means you can do these as you travel, just take your laptop along with you.

One girl I travelled with stopped while we were in Vietnam and helped at a diving centre in return for free diving and a small wage. Often it’s just a case of asking around in a town or city that you like to see what the options are.

Although often not paid, there are opportunities across world volunteering at animal sanctuaries and nature reserves. Friends took this option with their family last year in Costa Rica and there are many other places where basic lodging and food are offered in return for help.
