National Trust Membership

Public access to open spaces has certainly been something many of us have appreciated this year. The National Trust owns not just a vast number of properties but also a great deal of land that anyone can enjoy. Membership gives you annual free entry to many fascinating different historical houses and buildings.

Just as important is the parking available at many beautiful locations for walking (free for members where parking metres are installed). These include Stonebarrow near Charmouth, Burton Bradstock, Ringstead Bay and Parke on the edge of Dartmoor.  Membership can be individual or for different sized families.  As a charity the National Trust helps preserve much of our countryside and heritage.

There is a offer on at the moment for a £5 M&S voucher if you join the National Trust using this link  – click here

English Heritage Membership

With access to over 400 historic places this is another membership that is excellent value for anyone who enjoys getting out and about. If you have children to entertain, one adult can take up to six children which is a great advantage.

Membership includes entry to fascinating places across the country such as Stonehenge, Tintagel Castle, ancient standing stones, old abbeys, palaces and more. English Heritage also has a members rewards scheme with many money saving offers.

From a short walk along the seafront to a hike on Dartmoor, wearing the right outdoor gear is important especially in winter. Hawkshead have a good range of coats, walking shoes and clothes for adults and children, including well know brands such as Regatta and Craghoppers.

Hawkshead also have accessories such as rucksacks and even coats, leads and harnesses for dogs.  Lots of great gift ideas for outdoor lovers. Click here for the website.

Dare 2b

If you have skiers in the family then this is the shop for you.  A complete range of jackets, salopettes, goggles, snoods and gloves in fashionable styles.  Dare 2b also have a  selection of other outdoor gear, fitness and cycling clothing.  I can personally recommend this brand as we have bought ski kit from them.

Ordnance Survey Shop

I totally love the Ordnance Survey app on my phone. It’s been perfect for discovering new footpaths and helps keep me on track very much like a sat nav does in your car without the need for paper maps.

The OS Shop has lots of other options as well which make great presents. For instance you can customise a map with your own front cover or have a map centred on a particular place.

For the outdoor lover,  you can also buy brilliant picnic rugs and light weight towels with maps of Dartmoor, Snowdonia, London and more. Delve deeper into the OS Shop and there are all sorts of camping and outdoor accessories and a range of Garmin GPS devices.

Reeves and Reeves jewellery silver snowflake

Reeves & Reeves

You are sure to find something beautiful at Reeves and Reeves.  Based in Dorset making beautiful, affordable silver jewellery to take you from dog walk to dinner party.

With designs inspired by the countryside from bees and birds to acorns and even welly boots.  Find the perfect gift or why not treat yourself to something lovely.

The Wave

For a full adventure you can’t get much more outdoorsy than surfing. This year I took my teens and hubby to The Wave just outside Bristol for a beginners lesson. We all loved it. Apparently you can get as many waves in an hour on this man made surf than in 8 hours at sea.  Add in great tuition and in a short space of time you really feel like you have achieved something, even as complete beginners.

Great fun for anyone young at heart! For spectators and surfers needing to refuel there’s a cafe.  Follow this link to buy vouchers for The Wave at Bristol.

With the uncertainty of holidays abroad, finding more time for outside activities and staycations is set to stay with us. All Outdoor has a range of camping equipment and tents, perfect if you are planning a holiday under the stars.

Also search a range of gear for hiking, cycling, climbing as well as rucksacks and travel accessories.

Magazine Subscriptions

If all this talk of being active makes you want to curl up on the sofa for a rest then maybe that’s not such a bad idea. How about finding the perfect magazine to give as a subscription. With a choice of magazines from Cycling and Mountain Biking or Triathlon to BBC Gardeners World, Wildlife and Countryfile. As well as a host of craft and hobby titles, Buy Subscriptions has something for everyone.

More Gift Ideas for Outdoor Lovers

If you live in Devon and have children or grandchildren why not consider annual membership or gift vouchers to one of the local attractions. This is a great idea for supporting local businesses and encouraging families to get out.

Ideas include Wildwood Escot, River Dart Country Park, World of Country Life or Canonteign Falls. The website Devon with Kids has a fantastic list of suggestions here.
