Furzeleigh Down Dairy – discover great ice cream

Last year I spotted a hand written sign pointing down Cooks Lane simply reading “ice cream”. I needed no more encouragement to investigate. To my delight I discovered the lovely Val, selling hand made ice cream from her mobile ice cream van at the top of their farm entrance. Using milk from their own cows at Furzeleigh Down Farm in East Devon near Axminster, Val and her family were then starting out on their ice cream journey.

Being a farmer’s daughter myself, I appreciate the need for smaller farms to diversify in order to make up that income gap that we often hear about in our dairy industry. So that’s just what the Voysey family decided to do, although I have a sneaky feeling the they have been making ice cream in secret for years!

Fast forward a year and they really have moved on. Now Furzeleigh Down Dairy has a permeant home, a lovely wooden cabin that is the tea room and ice cream shop. Their ice cream and sorbets have won various awards and they even have celebrity endorsement from Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall – praise indeed! This year you’ll find their mobile unit at the River Cottage Autumn Fair.

… and did I mention how delicious the ice cream is?

Classic flavours like Chocolate or Strawberries and Cream are on offer, as well as their own inventions, Caramelised Fig (a best seller) and Devon Heaven as well as seasonal sorbets – you’ll just have to go and try them and let me know your favourite flavour. In fact you may have to go more than once!

Oh and did I mention the view?

Well if you wanted to show anyone not lucky enough to live round here a classic East Devon countryside scene then this is your spot. A stunning view across the Axe Valley, there really aren’t many places better to enjoy a cream tea or an ice cream, especially in the sunshine. The tea room has ample parking and a great space outdoors with picnic benches.

Whatever your age there is something magical about eating great ice cream!
