Shopping and Coffee – what’s not to like!

As my family and friends get older with me, it seems harder every year to find presents for them – most people have what they need and the high street gift offerings have become so homogenised it’s depressing.

So how great to find local crafts thriving here – they make great presents and are easy to find at Little Bits of Lovely in Axminster. To make it even better, after having had a good look round, I didn’t even need to step outside for a great cup of coffee thanks to Laurence who owns The West Country Higgler’s coffee shop under the same roof.

Little Bits of Lovely by name….

I felt a bit like a magpie looking around Pippa’s shop.

So many lovely things everywhere you turn – gorgeous jewellery including upcycled silver spoons which make amazing bracelets and key-rings; delicate earrings; ceramics with a trademark turquoise that I recognised as Damson Tree Pottery. Wonderful mirrors, stained glass, cards and lots more in a relatively small space. Pippa has a great eye for what people will like, with a back ground in fine art she clearly knows what’s what.

The West Country Higgler and Little Bits of Lovely share a great space in Axminster

West Country Higgler

This coffee shop is dog friendly (after 10am) which is great news and now open on Sundays from 10am -4pm.

Being an entrepreneur is something many people aspire to be. Having the nerve to step away from the security of working in large hotels and the wine industry at a young age was clearly just the beginning for Laurence who owns The West Country Higgler.

Starting off with a  Land Rover converted to serve proper coffee (which is still going strong at events and markets) Laurence had already spotted the expanding need for coffee in our modern lives. Like a drip Britons apparently spent nearly £8bn on coffee last year!  I’m not sure what percentage of that reached Axmintser but The West Country Higgler is a great place to get your fix (or tea and cake if you prefer). With coffee roasted locally in Budleigh Salterton and cakes made by his mum it’s got my seal of approval.
